About The Author:
Gary Shumway first became interested in underwater exploration during his gestation. However, he did not become a certified diver until later in life. With his three brothers and Father being certified aquaholics, he recently figured it was about time to get it done. Gary's Open Water Diver certificate was completed with open water dives in a Pennsylvania quarry near Pittsburgh. As the season was early, a dry suit was de rigueur. Since that time he has dove in West Virginia, California, Minnesota, Florida, Mexico, Tahiti, and Australia, with many more locations planned in the future. He is currently a Master Scuba Diver with specialties in Rescue Diver, Medic First Aid, Oxygen First Aid, Nitrox, Dry Suit Diver, Ice Diver, Altitude Diver, Boat Diver, Wreck Diver, and Cavern Diver.
The impetus to write this tome began when he was seeking information regarding SCUBA diving. Dive shop personnel, though generally helpful and knowledgeable, could not be expected to contribute all their time to answering his questions. Even after acquiring a small library of diving books, there just was not a single book that answered the type of questions a person inquiring about diving would ask. Thus SCUBA Scoop.
When not scuba diving, Gary works as a contract computer programmer. He has earned Masters degrees in Psychology (MA), Biostatistics (MPH), and Business Administration (MBA). He has published research and technical papers and the book, Winging Through America, A Motorcyclist's Solo Journey Through the 48 States. He has been a member of Toastmasters International via Grand Terrace Toastmasters for over 14 years and has obtained the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) and Division Governor of the Year awards. Gary has three children, Greg (deceased), Jeff, and Glenna and resides wherever he can find desk space and an Internet connection.
