Money
I read this book with one question, what is state? and it leads me to several questions about sovereignty, nation building and many other. According to Thomson, State building was materialized from something as banal as tribute, parley, and offerings. For mercenaries and pirates, their sovereignty goes to highest bidder. Capital talks. Extra economy activities bores them to dead. Chivalry and morality also bores them. They also gave straight up middle finger to ideology and even religion. For them, the sea, land and every soil on Earth are free for all. Being autonomous is the key here. They are more related within sense of survival and they play major role in early modern Colonialism and Age of Discovery. After reading this book, I might not be defining state building the same way again.
