Together, these two volumes represent the completed work of the Commission on European Contract Law, which set out to provide the legal foundation for drafting European Union measures on contract law by drawing on legal traditions from around Europe. The principles are confined to the general law of contractual obligations, occasionally bringing in rules that some legal systems consider part of law of torts or restitution. The principles themselves are presented in English and French, but the commentary is solely in English. Parts I and II, previously published in 1995 and 1997 respectively, have here been combined into one volume, while part III, the final section, is accorded a separate volume.
