Edwin Arlington Robinson was an early 20th century American poet who won three Pulitzer prizes for his work. Robinson's unhappy childhood may have contributed to his poems pessimistic mood. Some of his stories have a theme of the American Dream going awry. Children of the Night is a book of poems first published in 1897. The book did not do well until Teddy Roosevelt's son Kermit read the poems in school. He encouraged his father to read the book. When President Roosevelt read the book he liked it so much that he found Robinson a job in a customs office and bullied a publishing company into republishing the book.
