PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT
The Million-Dollar Rip-Off
The other day I picked up the newspaper and read that a man prayed to God on Friday
that he would win a million dollars in the lottery and on Saturday his ticket
was drawn. He won a million dollars.
These little news items can be found in the paper nearly every week and I'm positive
it's part of a publicity campaign to get the suckers to buy more lottery tickets.
But don't you realize, folks, that when you buy a lottery ticket you are getting
badly ripped off? So badly, in fact, that you'd be better off giving your money
to the first person you meet on the street. You have a better chance of being
left a fortune in his or her will than you have of winning a lottery.
Consider these facts: Las Vegas gambling casinos offer returns of up to 98 cents
for your gaming dollar; horses return 82-83 cents on the dollar; but the average
lottery returns only 42 to 49 cents on the dollar. So even if you are a gambling
freak, you have more of a chance of winning at a racetrack or in Las Vegas where
you can bet on almost anything!
Sure it sounds great — one million tax-free dollars! The dream of a lifetime!
Enough money to say "fuck you" to your boss and that mother-in-law who
always said you'd end up in the gutter. But it's a dream, a political fantasy
concocted to make you keep buying those tickets to paradise.
Moralists always argue that governments should not make it easy for citizens to
gamble because the average man might gamble away the rent or food money, and that
argument has a lot of merit. But where are the same moralists when it comes to
lottery gambling?
Go to any city and depending upon the local laws, you can't go into a bank, supermarket,
milk or cigar store without being urged to invest in some government-sponsored
fleece.
It's ironic that our elected leaders condemn casino gambling because they're concerned
that underworld influences might take over, yet they ballyhoo lotteries and tell
us that they're beneficial to society.
But beneficial to whom? Certainly not you — the average man in the street,
because you don't stand a chance.
Lotteries are loaded dice calculated to swindle unsophisticated people.
