When Beans hurts his leg in soccer practice right before the big championship game, his best friend Chester thinks it’s all his fault! Beans may not be able to play in the game, but he can still play an important role on the team when he cheers up—and cheers on—Chester.
Soccer lovers will find this early reader to their liking. Beans and his friend, Chester, are the team's stars. Nevertheless, Beans gets injured in a collision with Chester during a Wildcat practice and is consumed with guilt. Beans, as it turns out, harbors no ill will and wants his buddy to sign his cast and get out there on the field to help the team win the championship. Since this story has a happy ending, we know the team will win and the boys will continue to be friends in spite of the accident. The art is done in a contemporary cartoon style, which should make kids who watch television feel quite comfortable with this early reader. This is a Level 3 book in the "Step into Reading" series for kids who are reading on their own.
