OH, my God. Can I sue the author for damages so I can start my child's future therapy fund? The little boy protagonist has odd pets, his mom doesn't like them, okay...so she ABANDONS HER CHILD. Then the child, in a misguided attempt to win back his harridan mother's all-too conditional love ABANDONS HIS PETS (with a week's worth of food, hope you guys can all find your "fur-ever homes" in the next 6 days or else you're SOL!!). And the book ends with the child, utterly alone, hoping that destroying the love and trust he had built up between him and his pets will win Mommy back. Hope she notices, Kiddo, but they usually don't. Way to perpetuate the cycle of abuse.

I would NOT recommend reading this book to your child, especially if your child loves animals and has a sensitive heart, or if you the parent still have abandonment issues left over from your own childhood. Yikes. Not quite as traumatic as Spike Jonze's movie of "Where the Wild Things Are," but similar psychological vein.
