From fast growing victory gardens to mini-monuments to local servicemen-Chicago, the "City of Neighborhoods," saw all of its geographic parts vie for recognition and honor in a ethnic mosaic of patriotism.
The war years ushered in changing times for Chicago. The city became an important military center as thousands of troops trained or passed through en route to the war fronts, while Chicago's civilian population engaged in manufacturing war materials. As defense plants sprang up all over Chicago, African-American tenant farmers, who migrated from the South, and women replaced the male labor force.

Another gem from the Royal Collection; this birthday souvenir album charts The Queen's progress from her birth in 1926 to 2006 on a year-by-year basis.
Beginning with a newspaper announcement of her birth we see the Duke of Connaught's christening present, a magnificent silver cup, photographs of her as a baby while her parents were abroad and the cover photograph is one taken by her father, George VI. The Queen blossoms as she gets older and it is no surprise when Philip falls for her ... and she for him, of course!
Marriage, the death of her father, her coronation and life thereafter forever changed is portrayed with excellent illustrations from private albums and the Royal Archives. Many of the illustrations have never been seen before and go some way to giving a sense of normality to a life that obviously has not been so.
Trips abroad, state visits, less formal occasions, private functions are all depicted and overall it is a superb insight into a privileged life and one of complete devotion to her cause. And The Queen is always smiling and looks completely at ease but surely there must be moments when she is not quite so relaxed and friendly looking ... but there again we can't expect to see such photographs in a book such as this!
