"Who Speaks for the Vanquished?" tells the story of the growth of Zionist influence and the development of Zionist policies among American Jews during the years 1933-45. Utilizing primary sources of Zionist organizations and leaders of the period, Wells offers a documentary history that speaks for itself. The "New York Times'" coverage of the breaking events in Austria and Poland is shown to be in stark contrast with the Zionist press. Interwoven with these accounts are his personal reminiscences of his family who perished, and of his own struggle for survival in Poland. In the light of the historical record Wells questions the right of Zionism to speak as the authoritative voice for the vanquished.
