Finkelstein takes readers back to the early 1900s and the world's race to be the first to fly across the Atlantic. The book primarily follows the three groups who were the first to do so successfully, Lindbergh, Chamberlin and Levine, and Admiral Byrd's crew. A few other attempts of note are also pointed out. The primary focus of the book is the year 1927 when most of these successful flights occurred. Each flight and the celebratory tours are chronicled.
While an interesting and important time of history, this book at times felt a bit dry, especially for the intended audience. Some chapters, like those explaining the historic flights were done well, but the first couple not so much. The layout was also odd for the intended audience. I've never seen a book where the subtitles for pictures were in a larger font than the main text, but that was the case throughout the book. A good resource for aeronautical history, but not necessarily a book kids and teens will devour (unless they are airplane nuts).
Notes on content: About 3 minor swear words appear when quotes from historic figures are included. No sexual content. A couple plane crashes are included, but not described in any gory detail.
