The Cambridge history of medieval English literature

I am familiar with certain snippets of Ezell's work due to the nature of her relevance in the modules I have taken throughout my MSc. This was the first work of hers which I read cover to cover, as part of a book review assignment. Ezell's commentary on the notion of print and manuscript culture coinciding, contrary to the common thought that the advent of print eradicated manuscript production and usage, was enlightening, but not patronising. The idea of the social author maintaining the production and usage of text was one I had not considered before, and the sections on literally piracy were thought provoking enough to catalyse one to question ones own role in reading. Despite focusing on predominantly the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the work ends on the suggestion of authorship in the twenty first century and how advances in digital technology will adapt the social issues governing the reception, advancement and existence of the author, today.
