The National Park Architecture Sourcebook Book

A powerful and engrossing biography of an important architect who is far too little-known outside of Portland, Oregon. His architecture embodied the bold, neoclassical, approach to commercial buildings popular in the early 20th century and in his case, his take on this iconic style came to define Portland's downtown. This biography is comprehensive, rich in detail and research, and provides a good portrait of Doyle and his most important projects. My only complaint is that there are not more photos and examples of Doyle's working drawings and sketches'if any remain extant'would be great, too. Still, in all honesty, Doyle is just well-known enough to merit a single major biography from a professional historian in his region and I cannot expect that another book on him is likely to soon appear, so we must be grateful that this book is of the caliber it is since it's what we've got on the man.
