Having read My Life of Absurdity: The Autobiography of Chester Himes and Yesterday Will Make You Cry, the more interesting parts of this biography were earlier accounts of his family, later accounts from the time that Himes was writing his autobiography and after.
For the parts of Himes' life that I was familiar with, the book draws heavily from his autobiography and doesn't really expand upon it. Additional correspondence, sporadic views from others in his life, and information from media at the time do lend a more neutral feel. There is also some analysis of his works.
At the end, I don't think I got anything substantial out of this book beyond the bibliography of his works and a different word to describe Himes (ambivalent). Having said that, I think if I had not read part of his autobiography, this would have been more satisfying: it gives a biography of the subject and a sense of his place in literary history. I am not sure what I'm looking for in reading about Himes and why in the world I'm so fascinated.
