How to use the power of laughter in a classroom of young children.
This paperback activity book collects over 300 humorous rhymes, songs, and games that promote learning in young children. While the author introduces the book with the power of laughter to heal, the book focuses on the skills and concepts that can be gained through various rib-tickling activities. Chapter one, for example, focuses on tongue twisters, jokes and riddles. Silberg presents some familiar twisters, but, more often than not, she offers up wonderful but little-known tongue stumpers. Her riddles are equally as fresh, although quite a few seem more appropriate for older children : "A penny and dollar were on a table. The penny jumped off. Why didn't the dollar? The dollar had more sense". Young children probably will not understand the dual meaning of sense, and when punch lines need to be explained they lose their punch. Silberg also offers a knockout list of humorous board and picture books for young children but, inexplicably, takes up four pages of text space listing books for older children when this volume purports to be for younger children. Nevertheless, the collection, as a whole, is a winner, and belongs on the bookshelves of early childhood educators looking for a twist of levity in the classroom. 2004, Gryphon House, Ages adult.
