Terrific knowledge contained in this book, that's for sure. But to classify this book as either theory or hands-on is a tricky task. The text is best described as "theory of practice". It is loaded with information involved in diagnosing and repairing virtually every conceivable damage that can happen to an internal combustion engine, but not in step-by-step style. Simply speaking, the text purpose is to prepare reader mentally. Nevertheless, there is a wealth of information inside that'll make solid intellectual weapon throughout diagnosis, repair and decision making process. Did you know that you can check for cylinder compression using a digital storage oscilloscope? Or testing coolant condition with a multimeter? Ever wondered if you can actually repair a cracked block or head? So you want to test a component but not having the special tool? This book tells you those tips and more.
In conclusion, this book might be better suited to someone in the trade, not DIY hobby.
