Sugar of the Crop: My Journey to Find the Children of Slaves Book

I really, really wanted and expected to be blown away by this book. Breathtaking theme - the author tracks down and interviews living children of freedmen (think about that - their parents alive in 1865 and them alive over 130 years later - how many such people could still be around?). The voices and the stories of these men and women are powerful, and poignant, but here's the problem - you hardly get to hear those voices among all the author's interruptions to talk about her own family (itself a poignant and powerful story but too much the focus of a book that is supposed to be about her interviewees) and - worse - about the minutiae of her travels: missed directions, fast-food meals, credit card bills, etc. Who cares? I wanted to hear more from the centenarians and less from the author.
