Private Poets, Worldly Acts: Public and Private History in Contemporary American Poetry
Michael Lofaro was my undergraduate advisor, and I took two of his Agee classes. The man is more than slightly unhinged, but he knows Agee like Agee knew the tenant farmers in Alabama: he studied them intensely, knew them intimately, loved and defended them fiercely (even against himself). What I'm saying is, this book springs from a wealth of knowledge and anyone who reads Agee will benefit from this work.
