Of Irish Descent
For many, to invoke the word Irish is to conjure up the image of Catholicism. How did this happen...and more importantly, is it true today?
The Voice of the Irish gives a very brief overview of the history of Christianity in Ireland. Starting with the pre-Christians and projecting into the future, we get a good glimpse into the varied history of this island and the religious orders that have shaped its history.
Michael Staunton's writing style is simplistic and clear. Even people who do no like history may find this book interesting, simply because Staunton keeps the pace moving. He does not get bogged down in details and helps readers see the broad strokes.
Particularly helpful in this little book was the understanding of the monastic roots of Irish Christianity, the very long history of the struggles between Catholic and Protestant, and the author's assessment of the current state of Christianity.
This is probably not a 'beach' read, but is a fairly quick read. This book is for anybody who wants a good and interesting history book, or is simply curious about this subject.
