My kingdom for a horse Book

My Kingdom for a Horse is a collection of poems entirely about horses. It was written by Betty Ann Schwartz and illustrated by Alix Berenzy. The poetry book was geared towards a very specific audience. Only people whom love horses would appreciate this collection of poems. For other non-horse people the amount of time spent on this creature would be overbearing. However, I have ridden horses my entire life and found this to be a wonderful poetry book. I loved the rich description of the horses; many of the poems chose to have the horse be an ivory color. Which to many is very striking and rare. It talked about issues of taking care of horses in Robert Frost's poem The Runaway. In which the colt was left out or escaped the barn in the harsh winter. In The Horseman the reader can see the pure imagery of the ivory horse and its pale riders riding off into the hills at night. The Night Clouds also talked about the clouds in the sky looking like ivory mares in the sky rearing and running across the heavens. These are only a few examples of the rich pure descriptions of the horse. Many other poems in this book allowed the reader to see the horse in many different lights and many different forms. The illustrations were rather dark and hard to make out the horses. The usage of darker colors was harder for the reader to see these rich descriptions.
Overall this book is for an older audience 4th-6th grade. I would use this poetry book as in independent choice. This is due to the fact that some people may not like horses. However, being from the blue grass many people may appreciate learning about this animal and its important role here in Kentucky. I could teach the literary styles of the different poems and how each is effective in describing the same animal. It would also allow me to show the students multiple authors that are well recognized throughout the Untied States as well.
