In My First Forty Years, Jerry recalls his life in an honest and compelling manner. His stories begin with adventures of growing up in south Florida in the 1940s through 1964 when he joined the Army. He tells of his time in Viet Nam and then of being assigned to Panama to teach jungle warfare. He also covers his time at Fort Benning in light-infantry and mechanized units training in Alaska and Canada. He also tells what it was like as a drill sergeant during his last two years at Fort Benning. Throughout his book Jerry writes in a style that is inviting and descriptive. You feel his humor and his sense of duty to his country. The reader is left with an appreciation of the irony of someone with ample reason to be deeply skeptical of education gaining his deepest satisfaction in professional life as a teacher.
