Little Dog and Duncan
Personal reaction: This book is very heartwarming and shows the true attachment that children can develop with dogs. I enjoyed reading this book because of the relationship between the young girl, her dog "Little Dog," and their weekend playmate who is a dog named Duncan. The book revolves around the girl doing various daily activities with the two dogs that are quite adorable, especially the part where Duncan has to go home and "Little Dog" watches him leave, and you get a sense of the friendship that was formed between the two dogs.
Purpose/use in the classroom: This would be a great read aloud for young pre K to Kindergarden students. Students at that age love animals, especially dogs, and they will get real enjoyment from this book. A great activity would be to read the book to the children, and then have them talk about the bonds they have with their pets, or experiences that they have with pets of their friends or family. This is a great way to get the children thinking and sharing. The vocabulary is comprised of many verbs, in which students at that age need to be exposed to to expand on their vocabulary.
