At the height of the United States' expansion westward, forcing dozens of Native American peoples ever further from their customary lands and lifestyles, four renegade U.S. soldiers torture and kill three young Sauk women. Enraged with grief, a tribal chief curses the land where the massacre took place. He names the place "Heartless" and calls upon the spirits to force the white man to leave it alone or face certain madness and a horrible death. An invisible malignancy lingers in this piece of America's Heartland, but its attractive, innocent appearance draws men to its maw time and time again.
