This was my first attempt at reading old Greek playwrights and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book encompassed three of his best tragedies.
The saying that "There is nothing new under the sun" certainly applies to the first play of Euripides in this Easton Press edition - Medea. It can be summed up with another cliche'.. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
The second play entitled Hippolytus was a lesson in the whims of the Greek gods and their human playthings. Virtue is not always rewarded. I also learned more Greek god genealogy.
The final play in the book with the ominous title "The Baccchea" addresses the dangers of being overly civilized and not attending to the "Bacchanalian" side of human nature which in theory will bring you in more spiritual harmony with the gods.
