Extraordinary.
Originally published in 1976, these photos of family (mainly his wife's) were made as a part of daily life, like "sunlight on water or the weave of the porch screen and the openings and closings of those doors." Gowin says that he wanted to "live a quality with things".
Gowin was born in a small town in Virginia in 1941. His father was a Methodist preacher and his mother was a Quaker. He taught photography at Princeton for over 25 years. A student of his said "Photography, with Emmet, became the study of everything." He retired in 2009 and lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Edith (much featured in this book).
