Mr. May is a professional story teller, and these are some of his stories.
He grew up in a small town, Spring Grove, Illinois, where everyone told stories. His Dad was one of the best.
Mr. May told of growing up and telling stories to his older sisters, starting him on the road to story telling. He tells of riding his pony around the farm, inventing some characters to play with, etc. Some time after he started school, his family moved to town. He was related to about half the town, so he knew everyone, and they knew him.
It is most interesting because of the Catholic references - he was raised Roman Catholic, moved to town two doors from the Catholic church, was an alter boy, etc. He gives a very good description of being young, with all the odd thoughts and misconstrued ideas youngsters would have. He was also part of the Church when it was Latin. At one point he was very proud of being a part of a worldwide organization, where he could anywhere and not know what was being said in mass, because it is in Latin, just like home.
He was the last child of two very wonderful parents, and his love and admiration for them come through in the stories he writes of them. They were tenant farmers, so there is a lot of farming written about, too. Some of these anecdotes are a treasure because unless you lived in those times it is hard to understand how things were done, so having them written out here in detail is special.
