In this book Stafford tells about his experiences in prison/work camps during WWII when he was classified as a Conscientious Objector. It's always interested me that Robert Lowell was also a CO at the same time but apparently Stafford & Lowell never had much to do with each other. I've never seen anything either of them wrote that mentioned the other. Anyway, "Down in My Heart" has some neat anecdotes. Stafford met a philosophy student who was being questioned by the military as the student was being sent into confinement. When asked if he opposed all wars, even good ones, the student replied, according to Stafford, "Show me a good one." Later, when a group of inmates had a few dull moments on a street somewhere they'd been working, some of the people from the town, aware of the group's CO status, approached them menacingly. Stafford happened to have a copy of "Leaves of Grass" with him which he showed them and talked to them about poetry. The menace went away. Walking through forest on the day the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Stafford happened to see a lone cabin with a guy out on the porch playing a banjo.
