Deconstructing East Germany: Christoph Hein's Literature of Dissent
For a German, understanding the concept of Heimat is just a natural part of their cultural identity, although they're hard pressed to explain it. For the rest of us it just seems to encompass everything and nothing.
Although this book answered many of my questions, it also created many more and left some key elements out almost completely.
For any non- Germanic person seeking to understand the concept of Heimat I whole heartedly suggest this as a way of forming a foundation. Considering the scope of the subject, the author should be commended for what he did manage to include whilst keeping it relative.
Hopefully something else will come to print in the future that will help bridge the gap for a fuller understanding.
