Daijiro Kato was 250cc World Champion in 2001 and graduated to MotoGP for 2002, becoming 'Rookie of the Year' that season. Everything was looking very promising for him for 2003 with a ride alongside Sete Gibernau in the Telefonica Movistar Honda team, but he was tragically killed early in the season at the Suzuka round of the MotoGP series. At the time of his death he was ranked seventh in the world and was tipped for greatness.
