Building Manhattan

2. PreK - 2nd Grade
3. This book describes a quick overview of Manhattan's history from the first arrivals of the Dutch, to the very large skyscraper Manhattan that we know and love today. The illustrations are gorgeous in the back of this book there is a timeline in the back of the book.
4. I really like this book because I really enjoy New York history. Its a great book for youngsters, but unfortunately it is washed with the white narrative. It does not suggest that there were any Native Americans originally living in Manhattan (which was named from the tribe of Manhatta Native Americans that were ORIGINALLY living there). It also does not suggest all of the hundreds of African Americans who were brought to New York to build it.
5. I would use this book in my classroom but I would make sure that other groups of people are heard when I use this book in my classroom. This book is a good representative of how many groups are forgotten in society. Its important that children realize this.
