Prior to the 1870s, DuBois was a forest settlement with only a handful of families living in the area. John DuBois changed that when he settled in the area and created one of the largest lumber industries in the state. In less than two decades, a thriving town had sprung up. A devastating fire in 1888 destroyed the business district; however, as businesses such as coal mining, iron ore, and sandstone continued to grow, the area was rebuilt. With the expansion of the railroad, surrounding towns began to develop. Through rare photographs and early postcards, Around DuBois provides glimpses of industries such as the lumbermill, the area coal mines, the stone quarry of Falls Creek, the Van Tassell Tannery, the Brewery, and the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railroads. Also included are images of events and people who left their mark on the area, including celebrities such as Thomas Edison, noted painter Richard Burfoot, and cowboy star of silent movies Tom Mix.

Like many of these collections of photos from this fine publisher, it's a mixed bag, and I'm glad to have it.
This volume is heavy on the portrait photos of Atlanta residents, helpfully indexed with structures with which they worked. Photos of the city's defenses are quite moving. At end, there are photos of wreck and ruin.
I have several favorite images here. Across six pages (pages 10-15), there is a three-part panorama taken from the dome of the Atlanta Female Institute. The Crawford, Frazer & Co. slave market appears (page 100) in a photo by Barnard; recently, the AJC put it side-by-side with an image of modern Five Points MARTA station. These sort of before and after shots are outside the scope of this book, but so compelling.
Author Michael Rose uses Atlanta History Center archival collections to good effect, as usual.
I do recommend reading a narrative history to complement this stuff, for example, The Bonfire: The Siege and Burning of Atlanta, by Marc Wortman (here, )
