Dogwood trees were in full bloom as Union General Frederick Steele led 8,500 soldiers out of comfortable quarters in Little Rock and into the pine and scrub woodlands of southwest Arkansas. Steele's intended target was Shreveport, Louisiana. He planned to join another Union force coming from Fort Smith, bringing his projected complement to 12,500 troops, and then link with another Federal army in Louisiana.

A collection of papers presented at a seminar on the Battle of Poison Spring. This book describes the events leading up to the massacre of African American soldiers at the Civil War battle that occurred in Arkansas in 1864.
Without actually listing the reasons that some deny, justify, or shift the blame for the atrocity, the papers carefully destroy those reasons by referencing eyewitness accounts to the killings and showing how the killings were the first in a string of retaliatory actions, not a response to prior atrocities.
There is also a discussion of the mindset of white southerners of the time towards African American slaves, and how that led to the way they viewed and treated African American soldiers.
