In this scene, painted in 1909 by the preraphaelite artist Herbert James Draper (1864-1920), the Greek hero is depicted in one of the Odyssey's most famous episodes. Ulysses has commanded that he be tied to his mast to save him from answering the songs of the three sea nymphs (the Sirens) determined to lure him over the side to his death. Why the oarsmen have not themselves already leapt overboard and abandoned Ulysses there is another question ?.
