The Hunt for the Albemarle: Anatomy of a Gunboat War
Frank Haskell fought in the battle, and he provides a first hand description of defending against Pickett's charge on day 3. Haskell was an officer, and senior in command at the point where the confederates breached the defense line. He describes the hand to hand fighting and the turning of the attack.
Haskell was killed at Cold Harbor the following year. His book on Gettysburg was not published until 1898. It provides descriptions of the battle that bring the Civil War to life.
