Although suffering from many of the same weaknesses as the preceding book (Invasion and Conquest of North Carolina), 'The Hunt for the Albemarle' reads more smoothly and builds to a dramatic climax as the two principal antagonists, Confederate Lt. James W. Cookie and Federal Lt. Cmdr. Charles W. Flusser prepare for their seemingly-inevitable combat on the sounds of North Carolina. Although this book benefits from the resulting limited structure, I'm not entirely clear on why this was published as a separate book from 'Invasion and Conquest.' The two volumes share sources and style and were most likely written as one compilation. Perhaps best read in reverse order, 'Hunt for the Albemarle' first and then 'Invasion and Conquest' as a "prequel" of sorts.

Frank Haskell fought in the battle, and he provides a first hand description of defending against Pickett's charge on day 3. Haskell was an officer, and senior in command at the point where the confederates breached the defense line. He describes the hand to hand fighting and the turning of the attack. Haskell was killed at Cold Harbor the following year. His book on Gettysburg was not published until 1898. It provides descriptions of the battle that bring the Civil War to life.
