Chronicles the lives and expeditions of Henry Stanley and David Livingstone as they unlocked many geographic secrets of Africa and traces the history of European colonialism ...
Gr 6-9-Series titles that examine key figures in colonial exploration. In 1524, Francisco Pizarro made his first trip to Peru. By 1533, he and a small army had captured the Inca capital. The book describes how he accomplished this, offering plenty of details about his military campaigns. One chapter includes background information on Columbus and Cort s that provides a useful historical perspective on European imperialism; another describes the successful Inca empire. The straightforward presentation of facts includes some quotes and excerpts from source documents, generally leaving judgments about the actions of Pizarro and his successors to readers. A brief final chapter points out the devastating long-term effects of the conquest on the indigenous peoples. Stanley and Livingstone gives a solid overview of the "scramble for Africa." From Livingstone's early missionary explorations to Stanley's many journeys that followed, European ventures into Africa were filled with daring adventure and violence. Both men were fascinating individuals, and although the author does not offer intimate portraits, students will learn much about them through their words and actions. The last chapter discusses the powerful legacy of the era of African exploration, including its many destructive elements. Both books include black-and-white maps, reproductions, and photos. Solid additions for collections needing information on these topics.-Steven Engelfried, Deschutes County Library, Bend, OR Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
