Rita Quillen has written a wonderful book, the only full-length study of Appalachian poetry I know and bound to be the best for a long time to come. She has drawn together poets we love, carefully reading them, Interpreting them, and deepening our own appreciation of their work. Her work is not only an exercise in understanding; It is an emblem of pride. Every one of us who counts himself or herself an Appalachian must be grateful to her for making us-and others as well-see clearly that we live at the most glorious literary moment our region has ever had.

In my mind Pablo Neruda absolutely belongs in the pantheon of some of the greatest poets to ever live and write upon the earth. I have yet to come across a Neruda poem that does not contain at least one line that I didn't instantly vow to memorize. His is the beautiful originality that makes humanity seem so alive and free.
I now vow to finish reading this book because (1) I hope it helps me to understand my Chilean wife a little better, (2) I have a little girl who is half-Chilean, (3) we are leaving for Santiago in June, and (4) this is one of the most ambitious epics ever attempted, written by a poet whose words have always exceeded my highest expectations.
