MIRROR OF VENUS
by Wingate Paine
With words by:
Francoise Sagan
Federico Fellini
Wingate Paine is a Mayflower New Englander, an ex-Marine captain, a connoisseur
of French wine, and a devotee of Hatha-Yoga. He broke with family tradition (law,
banking, the ministry) to become a first-rank photographer.
Mirror of Venus is the culmination of this career in photography. It is now in
its sixth edition with over 125,000 copies in print and well on its way to becoming
a contemporary classic.
His fate seems inexorably entwined with the Venus he himself created. Photographs
from the book have been made into a short film which critics have called "a
visual valentine to feminine beauty" and "a work of genius." Now,
abandoning still photography and filmmaking, he is mirroring his Venus through
the medium of sculpture.
Francoise Sagan has been a productive and successful author since the appearance
of Bonjour Tristesse in 1953, and Federico Fellini is among the world's foremost
screen writers and directors.
