Review # 1 was written on 2017-09-10 00:00:00 Gerald Huston "The History of a Vendetta" is unique: a dispassionate version of peasant vengeance. Motive is deliberately hidden among a torrent of facts about Greek politics and peasant beliefs, some of which strain credibility. Character is elusive. One learns more about Jane Austen's characters in the exposition (in "Emma", perhaps in the opening sentence) than about the assassin, his victim, or their sons here. And perhaps that is the author's point: life in this kind of Cretan village is so circumscribed that emotional life barely registers. Still, there are startling images, like the motif of the girl who goes to feed the silkworms. |

Having grown fond of Smith's Bible Dictionary, I now continue to use an electronic version that is available in the Pocket Sword app. |
