Review # 1 was written on 2019-01-19 00:00:00 Alex Mundy Written 10 years ago, most of the chapters dealing with Afghanistan are by now quite dated, though some some offer interesting glimpses of paths not taken during the early reconstruction efforts. The most interesting parts are chapters 8, 9 and 10, which offer well stated cases for the primacy of, on the one hand, "pure" humanitarian work aimed at relieving the immediate problems of the suffering, and, on the other, politically directed reconstruction with the aim of enhancing the local economy and the legitimacy of the central government.
