Matthew Binns is co-author of this book and a colleague working on molecular genetics of horses. He and Tony Morris, a bloodstock agent, worked together to craft a book about the history of Thoroughbred horse breeding, the invention of diverse breeding systems beginning in the 1700s and their juxtapositions with what we now know about genetics. The history section in the beginning of the book is fascinating and is an effective addition to the information shared by Peter Willet in his books. The basic principles of genetics are well described using coat color as a model. -- They discuss Bruce Lowe numbers, Joe Estes' writings in the 1930s which frankly and effectively debunked diverse breeding schemes, mitochondria, heart scores, X factors, muscle function, diseases, inbreeding and such. The book is thoughtful. The authors politely identify questions about conventions that are not readily explainable using modern understanding of biology. At the same time, they also explain why biological phenomena that might be construed to explain conventional practices (broodmare sires and genomic imprinting, mitocondria and mare influences, etc)are not really compatible. I wish they had provided more citation for the scientific examples they cited. That would have made it easier for the casual reader to dig deeper. Many thoughtful examples are provided that clarify complex issues.

honestly, this book was one of the overall least interesting dinosaur-related books i have read thus far (and i have read a fair few!!), and i think a big part of that was the narrative voice used here. at times, it felt like it was trying to dumb things down, but at others... i don't know. i just didn't like it! i also felt like the best pieces of interesting information were saved for the last few chapters, and at that point, i had tragically already stopped caring. :/
