As well as laying out the story of Nietzsche’s life, this highly-readable book serves as an introduction to Nietzsche’s philosophy. Lichtenberger divides Nietzsche’s philosophical development into two distinct eras: the ‘negative’ era and the ‘positive’ era. During the ‘negative’ era, Nietzsche set about destroying the values which he thought were causing Europe to descend into decadence and nihilism. During the positive era, Nietzsche attempted to describe a new set of values that might one day lead to the superman of the title. The book does a wonderful job of describing Nietzsche’s main thoughts during these two eras. The only aspect of the book that I dislike is that it tries to describe eternal recurrence as a legitimate scientific theory, when the scientific legitimacy of eternal recurrence is completely irrelevant to Nietzsche’s thought. Overall however, this book is fantastic both for those who are new to Nietzsche, and those who are already familiar with his work.

They are all here, Ayer, Austin, G.E. Moore, even Wittgenstein who is considered to be an English philosopher.
