Today, photovoltaic cells cost between $0.25 and $0.50 per kilowatt-hour, compared to $0.025 to $0.05 for natural gas. So, people could argue that they are too expensive, but they also have to think about the environment and other forms of solar power besides photovoltaic cells. Solar Power was written by Clay Farris Naff, a journalist, author, and nonprofit executive who currently serves as the executive director of the Lincoln Literacy Council in Lincoln, Nebraska. His book looked at a few of the specifics of solar power: history, viability, and the future. Mr. Naff says that the Greeks and Romans used passive heating in their homes in 400 B.C., but it was not until 1900 that the first solar power company'The Solar Motor Co.'was started. Major areas that benefit from solar power today are rural areas and developing countries that are off the grid. The next topic Mr. Naff discussed was the viability of solar power. The problem with solar power is the solar panels only convert 15% of sunlight into usable power; to convert the entire U.S. to solar power it would cost over $30 trillion. So, with these major objections, what is it the point of switching to solar power? Well, for example, if someone lives in an area with plentiful sunlight, they can install solar panels on their roof and sell the power they do not use to the power companies. I learned from this book, that sometimes in life you cannot walk away from the problem, you have to work harder and develop a creative solution. Despite the enormous cost of solar panels, scientists are still working hard to develop a solution. I chose to read Solar Power because I want to pursue a career in mechanical engineering and there are many jobs for mechanical engineers in the solar power industry. This book lived up to its promise of informing readers about the history and future of solar power. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about new technology. Readers should avoid this book if they dislike reading text-book style books because it was very factual and argumentative with no personal relation to the author. The audience for this book should want to read only the hard facts and arguments of solar power. So readers may still be wondering, with all the financial issues, what is the plan to implement solar power into the world and what are the new solar technologies currently being worked on, besides photovoltaic cells? Read the book and find out.

In the book, "Solar Power", it has some very great information about the history of solar energy, how it was developed, how to change sunlight into energy, how it benefits rich nations, how people will start using solar energy, solar hydrogen and solar water heaters, and many more informational items. My favorite part of the book was Chapter 1: Part 3, when they talked about how scientists discovered how to change sunlight into energy. Another one of my favorites was Chapter 3: Part 1, when they talked about why solar energy will become more common in american households. I suggest reading this book if you want to learn everything or almost anything about solar energy.
