Review # 1 was written on 2018-09-04 00:00:00 Peter Miskech In this book, Alston outlines some important revisions to the theory of speech act and the truth conditions of illocutionary act. He also studies more examples and linguistic cases, and to illustrate these, he propounds an idea about linguistic norms, illocutionary rule, that is different from John Searle's idea of Conventional/Normative effects. According to Alston, in speech acts, there are two types of normative rule. First, Alston lists illocutionary norms along with Moral Rule in truth condition of speech act. But in order to answer and explain some of the cases, he puts the moral norms under the illocutionary Rule and lists it as those which utterer takes responsibility for. In the second half of the book, the author analyzes the problem of meaning and examines the relation between illocutionary act and the semantic meaning. After it is concluded that there is a supervenience between the two, in addition to the very detailed discussions and analysis of many cases, he considers that the metaphysical identity is the best explanation for it. Alston explains how the property of being meaningful in sentences is identical to being usable in speech acts and illocutionary acts. He then explains the similarity between the meaning property of the sentences and the property of being usable in illocutionary rules and linguistic norms. Alston's point of view, although it corrects many of the defects of John Searle's theory of speech acts and is an important development in this theory, it is not without its problems and Alston himself aware of them. Also, in cases such as assertion, his analysis has serious difficulties.
