World Religions from Opposing Viewpoints presents the reader with a broad question (ex: Chapter 1: Can the World's Religions Solve Global Promblems?) and then presents pro and con arugments about a topic that fits that question (ex from Ch 1: The Catholic Church Helps Fight AIDS vs. The Catholic Church Undermines AIDS Prevention Efforts). Each chapter and subchapter include an introduction with summaries on what they are about to read and includes questions on things to look for in the article or think about while reading the article, helping readers to think more critically about the information. At the end of each chapter there is provided a list of supplemental articles that complement what the reader has just read. At the end of the book is a list of questions for further discussion of what the reader has read, a list of organizations to contact for further information, and a thorough index. I like this book because it uses a variety of authors, from politicians to religious leaders, scientists, authors, journalists, etc., and includes book excerpts, articles, and speeches. Many of the articles in the book touch upon sensitive issues, such as fundamentalism, suicide bombings, stem cell research, etc. It provides a variety of resources for the reader to encourage critical and active thinking, challenging the reader to consider a viewpoint or opinion opposite of their own.

"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this." - John Stuart Mill
