I read this for work, for rather odd values of work. It was interesting and I appreciated both the textual analysis and the overview of the available archeological evidence (yay pictures!). I probably won't review it at length because it is kind of tangential to the usual stuff I review, but I liked it! Also my copy had the most hilarious library vandalism I've seen all year, and since I've seen it literally the day before the Jewish New Year, I can confidently make that point about "all year". Will try to take a pic in a bit... OK here it is: Source of the book: KU Watson Library

This book is solid. Niditch utilizes fairly accessible language regarding a rather niche and/or hyper-specialized topic, all while addressing common themes and trends in contemporary NELC circles. Loved it. Specifically, I enjoyed her section on the "transformation of the female 'other'" (i.e., chapter 6).
