This was a well-researched book that effectively shared much about Alexander's life and conquests. It was a fast read, easy to understand, and captivating. What an incredible life! I mean, how cool to have Aristotle as your private tutor!! I appreciate the documentary-style of sharing information, without forcing the reader into judgment - just a great place to learn about the circumstances and events of Alexander the Great's life, and how he responded to them, leaving the reader to judge for themselves about Alexander's actions. "He was, after all, only a man." Indeed, a driven, strong, brave, brilliant man, but "his failings were real enough, and certainly Alexander himself was aware of them. But the key to his greatness can be seen clearly in what he tried and failed to do as well as in what he was able to achieve." This quote from the book represents a balanced perspective on the retelling of his life. Up to this point, I only had a glorified concept of Alexander the Great; this book helped me understand so much more of the life of Alexander the Great, his accomplishments, and how he faced circumstances. I would recommend this book as a read aloud or independent reading to children aged 12 and up (there are a few places with brief descriptions of some brutality - it is a book about a conqueror, after all). There is MUCH in this book that would inspire many great conversations and discussions with our young people. It is also a great adult read, especially if you are like me, and only had a fleeting understanding of Alexander the Great. Also, the illustrations in the book were fabulous - from many great ancient and historical sources that were intriguing to study. I enjoyed much time observing the illustrations and their descriptions, too.
