Review # 1 was written on 2017-05-10 00:00:00 Ronald Miller Excellent. This book is a compilation of essays which explore different approaches to breath work, and is divided into Eastern breathing practices (Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Tao, Aikido), Western breathing practices (Character Armoring, Rebirthing, Holotrophic, Freediving, Buteyko, BreathExperience), and Middle Eastern breathing practices (Kabbalah and the Breath, the Holy Breath, Sufism). It was really interesting to see what all of these practices had in common, and how they differed. I've been studying BreathExperience breath work for the last 3 years, and was particularly interested in the practices that allowed the breath to come and go on its own without control. I'll be revisiting a few of these essays again. I particularly enjoyed 'The Holy Breath: Breath in the Cosmology and Spiritual Practice of the Aramaic Jesus', which offered a different interpretation of the scriptures in the Bible. I was also very intrigued by 'Character Armoring: A wall between Oneself and the World', which explores the work of somatic psychologist Wilhelm Reich; and all of the essays about the different Eastern Breathing Practices. |
