Poignant This book does a very thorough job of diagnosing the spiritual malaise afflicting the late 20th century. The author is very well-read and capable of synthesizing a wide range of philosophical, theological, sociological, and poetic texts to provide an impressive framework. His insight into the economic and cultural factors contributing to the virtual extinction of visible Christendom are striking. His later chapter on the desert spirituality required of some in the modernist drought is especially illuminating. My complaint is that much of this still smacks of an idealogical perspective devoid of contact with our current reality. It is a work steeped in providing a propositional theoretical solution to a problem that is quickly changing. He could not have imagined the swift changes of the 21st century so in some ways this is not a direct fault. However, his language is at times needlessly esoteric. It's not entirely evident who his primary audience is other than, perhaps other priests. Additionally, I'm wary of his heavy quoting from Balthazar. As a Thomist of the "strict observance" this might simply be an unwarranted prejudice. I think it is worth reading if you are Catholic and wondering what some of the real problems are.

Outside of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Fr. Nichols is the best living theologian we have with us today.
