The introduction says that this book could be used as a text for college/university level course on the Natural History of the Hawaiian archipelago. I was looking for a popular science level book on Hawaii, but the only book I found was this one. It is a little strange rating a text book, but I think it is a good one, even though I have read only about a third of the book. I started out by reading the chapters in the middle which focused on evolution and ecology in general and then Hawaiian flowering plants and birds. I then moved to the beginning and read the chapters on Plate Tectonics, Archipelago formation, Volcanism, Hawaiian Topography and Actions of the Ocean. These were the best chapters, especially after having visited HI. The life of a volcanic island is very interesting. I never knew that volcanic islands sink and there are white coral sand island that form above them, which also eventually sink. I had also never heard of a shield volcano before. The remaining chapters are a little too detailed on different life forms and then on Hawaiian human history - I am skipping those for now.

This work gives a comprehensive natural history of the Hawaiian archipelago . In twenty eight well-illustrated chapters, Ziegler discuss plate techtonics and island formation through volcanoes, plant and animal evolution, human migration and their effects on the environment. It is written so that the non-scientist may understand and appreciate this most interesting subject. Kudos to Ziegler.
