Review # 1 was written on 2020-09-29 00:00:00 Julia Allen This entire series is a must have for anyone with an interest in philosophy. I don't think any series has surpassed it. And if you're interested in philosophy avoid any book that gives you its history in one volume, especially Russell's or Durant's work. The first volume is the weakest in the series (he even admitted this to a professor I had), but it is still worth reading. Volume 7 is probably one of the best introductions to German Idealism around. Reading his sections on Hegel, Marx and Nietzsche will make reading these authors an easier task. In fact, save yourself some time and a couple of headaches and don't even bother reading Marx after reading Copleston's chapter on him. I believe that Marx needs to be studied in order to understand the 20th century. But if you think you agree with Marx, especially after reading Copleston, then have your head examined.

Review # 2 was written on 2016-03-27 00:00:00 Wayne Gray This is the third volume of Copleston’s seminal work containing books VII through IX. Brilliant. Even the most obtuse philosophies are addressed and made as clear as humanly possible – consider Sartre for example. Superlatives elude me about the brilliant Copleston. His contemporary Bertrand Russell pales in comparison. It is a pity that so few – including Philosophy majors – have ever been exposed to him.
